PR members and the public must be wary of dirty tactics employed by BN



At around 11.00am this morning a group of about 20 mainly Indian youths demonstrated in front of the DAP Perak headquarters. They claimed to be DAP members from the Buntong branches and members of the PR Youths in Perak.

I have now verified from Buntong DAP branches and our national membership record that those who participated in the demonstration are not DAP members.

We suspect BN is behind the demonstration as the former Ipoh Barat PKR division chief, Fauzi Muda was seen among the group. Can BN owns up?

A police report will be lodge by a representative from the Buntong DAP branches against this group for impersonating as DAP members tomorrow.

We urge DAP members and the public to stay calm and be wary of the dirty tactics employed by UMNO/BN which we have witnessed repeatedly in Penang.

I call on the people to stay on course with PR in our mission to save the nation from bankruptcy and destruction by changing the BN government in the coming 13th General Election.

Perak DAP shall continue to be the beacon of hope for a better Malaysia

I have been planning for two months for this one week trip away from home. This is my third day here in Nepal.

My family and I are happy with our stay here. But while enjoying the sightseeing and foods here, my thoughts are also with my second family back home in Malaysia—the DAP.

DAP is like a family and comrades are just like brothers and sisters. The last thing I want to do is to hurt this family and the family members.

Nevertheless, to all those Party leaders and members as well as party supporters who have felt disappointment or even anger over the Perak family problem becoming a public issue, I hereby tender my sincere apologies.

I have no hidden agenda or ill intention. My conscience is clear.

I spoke no lie and made no insinuation against anyone. I was prepared to go open and tell all--nothing but the truth.

But since I have agreed with the Party Secretary General Sdr Lim Guan Eng of the need to cease talking about internal issues openly, I shall abide by the agreement.

I wish to take this opportunity to reiterate that despite the problems, challenges and disappointment, I shall remain committed to the DAP cause.

Sdr Lim Kit Siang hit the nail on its head when he said that Perak DAP must demonstrate leadership which can win public confidence and support.

I shall play my part to ensure that DAP shall continue to be the beacon of hope for Malaysians who have yearned so long for a better Malaysia

Speech by Dato’ Ngeh Koo Ham, DAP Perak Chairman at the DAP Taman Kanthan Jaya dinner last night (Sunday 3rd October 2010) at Kwan Ti Meow hall (Temple hall), Perak.

Forgive us if we have been less than perfect in handling DAP Perak problems. DAP Perak calls on the public to allow it to resolve its problems internally and calls on the people to continue to support the DAP for what it stands for and for its proven track record.

Today almost all the newpapers give headline coverage with regard to the intended resignation of Sdr M. Kulasegaran from DAP Perak.

Thank you to the many who have expressed their concern for the unity and the solidarity of DAP Perak. As Chairman I will be the first to be concerned that they are maintained.

After M. Kula informed the media concerning his intended resignation, many unfair articles have been written and hurtful comments made against me and my cousin, Nga Kor Ming. We became the target of hate and are exposed to the attacks of our enemies. For the above reasons, I have earlier expressed my regret that M. Kula should expose internal matters to the media.

I would like to have may side of the story told but I would be committing the same error. I will be exposing my comrades and the party to the attacks of the enemy. A soldier will keep a secret to safeguard a nation and risked being shot. I will willingly suffer the injustice of being denied the right to reply and be subjected to hurtful attacks that have been assailed against me than to put my party in jeopardy and cause the mission of the people to be derailed.

The people’s mission is to have a change of government in the coming 13th General Election to save the nation from bankruptcy and destruction.

Just like any organisation be it a School Board, Parents Teachers Association, a church committee, a temple committee or a Non Government Organisation, there are bound to be differences because they are made up of individuals. Whatever differences, they must be resolved internally lest it brings negative impact and image to the organization. I believe whatever differences, M. Kula has with me or with others, they can be resolved internally. I asked that you do not hate M. Kula for what he has transpired. I asked that you do not hate me or my cousin, Nga Kor Ming after hearing one side of the story. You may have judged us wrongly and unfairly. Please support each and every leader of the DAP. Allow us to settle our differences internally just like you would with other organizations.

You must continue to support the DAP for what it stands for and for its proven track record. Each and every support is needed to accomplish our coming mission. I hope this episode will not in any way erode your confidence in the DAP and PR. Forgive us if we have acted less that perfect in the abovesaid episode.

DAP Secretary General and Penang Chief Minister Sdr. Lim Guan Eng, who was away for an official trip to Australia, spoke to Sdr. Ngeh Koo Ham on his return at Penang International Airport. We agreed with Sdr. Lim's suggestion that matters involving Perak DAP should be handled internally. Thereby we will not be making any public statements or answer press queries on this issue. We shall await Sdr. Kula's return from Nepal and also for our Secretary General Sdr. Lm Guan Eng to convene a meeting, which shall also be attended by Sdr. Lim Kit Siang.

With Dato Samy Vellu’s planned exit in January, a major obstacle has been removed and it is likely that snap polls will be held in March next year.

Dato Samy Vellu is not the first president of a component party of Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition to have been defeated in a general election.

Gerakan’s Tun Lim Chong Yu was defeated in a general election but he chose to retire honorably.

It is no exaggeration to say that that due to his unwillingness to retire honorably following his and MIC’s electoral defeats in the 2008 general election, Samy who has long overstayed his welcome has suffered public humiliation unprecedented in BN’s history, with several BN leaders openly calling him to retire from politics and labeling him a liability to the coalition.

In 2009, former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad whom Samy himself has long admired openly lashed out at Samy, describing him as a liability to the Barisan Nasional coalition.

Mahathir said that Samy should relinquish his post for his party's failure in the 2008 general elections, where Samy was also defeated in his parliamentary stronghold of Sungai Siput.

Mahathir was reported to say:

"In other countries, when a leader fails, he resigns voluntarily. In Japan, he would commit harakiri (suicide). We are not asking him (Samy Vellu) to commit harakiri.

"You have failed to lead MIC to the point that you lost yourself,"

"Samy's performance is worse than Pak Lah (Abdullah), but he still does not want to give up his post," he said, adding: "He should have resigned before things got to this stage."

Although Samy has resisted all pressures to quit early, his days were already numbered from the day when he lost his parliamentary seat.

Even the Prime Minister ‘s reminder to BN component party leaders at the launch of 63rd MIC General Assembly that it was pointless for them to strive to be popular within their own party when they were unpopular with the people was seen as a direct message to Samy to retire from politics.

As such, Samy’s yesterday’s announcement that he will finally call it quits in January 2011 does not come as a surprise.

The only question that some people have raised is why did he have to wait this long to make the decision to retire when he could have done so honorably immediately after the 2008 general election and saved himself and MIC all the public political humiliation.

There has been speculation that Prime Minister may dissolve Parliament
next year but to proceed with his plan, he has to first ensure that Samy who has been regarded as a liability to BN must step down as MIC president .

Chua Soi Lek should have the courage to admit his and MCA’s mistakes and to apologise to the Chinese community for going against the community’s wishes in the “528” takeover of Nanyang Siang Pau and China Press in 2001

May 28, 2001 was a black day for the Malaysian Chinese community and a blow to press freedom when MCA went ahead to acquire Nanyang Siang Pau and China Press Daily despite strong protest from the Chinese community.

The takeover was made through MCA’s Huaren Management for RM230 million.

Although MCA had then defended the takeover as a business deal, the argument was not convincing at all.

But yet MCA which claims to represent the interest of the Chinese community went ahead with the arrogant proposal.

Last week, MCA disposed off the remaining 3.6% shares and MCA‘s Youth Chief Datuk Wee Ka Siong had apologized for the Party’s takeover of the two dailies.

However, MCA president Dato Chua Soi Lek refused to tender an apology. He was reported to say yesterday that the issue of an apology did not arise and it could not rectify anything.

Chua has also stressed that MCA will not sell off other media organisations owned by the party through Huaren, including the Star English daily and several radio stations despite calls by media watchdogs for the Chinese-based party to totally withdraw from the media industry.

He said , "In a democratic country, every NGO is entitled to express their view and the same also applies to political parties. However, this does not mean that when some people express their view, other people have to agree."

Chua’s argument for not tendering an apology for the “ 528 takeover ”is not acceptable. Neither is his justification for MCA not to withdraw totally from the media industry.

Firstly, as one of the leaders who strongly supported the “528 takeover” of Nanyang Siang Pau and China Press and as the present MCA president, Chua Soi Lek should have the courage to admit his and MCA’s mistakes and apologise to the Chinese community for going against the community’s wishes.

He should in fact also apologise to the top managers and editors of the two newspapers who had to leave immediately as a result of the takeover deal.

Secondly, MCA should uphold the principle that in a vibrant democracy, free, independent and professional media are important and hence there must be no political party ownership of the media industry.

The question therefore is not that MCA has to listen to every NGO’s view, but a question whether it is committed to what should be the right practice in a democracy.

On 3/8/2010, Dato’ Seri Zambry Bin Abdul Kadir stated in the Perak State Assembly that the State has RM847.5 Million (according to book value) in reserve or RM928.36 Million if based on current market value.

The New Sunday Times in its 26/9/2010 edition quoted the Perak State current reserve stands only at RM600 Millions. Why a sudden drop of RM247.5 Millions in less than 2 months?

At the 3/8/2010 State Assembly sitting, Dato’ Zamry boasted an increase in revenue of RM117.26 Milliion for the period of January to July 2010. What has happened to this additional amount? The state reserve should have increased in view of this additional income.

Dato’ Zambry has nothing to boast concerning this additional RM117.26 million as I was given to understand this amount comes mainly from land premium payments. I was not given the opportunity to verify this from the State Government as Dato’ Seri Zambry has insisted that the State Assembly can only sit for one day so that the elected representatives do not have the opportunity to question the state government on numerous issues. Income from land premiums only mean that the BN government has been approving many pieces of land to cronies at prices much below the market value. The increase in income was not due to good governance, competence, thriftiness or creation of wealth through effective development programmes.


The New Sunday Times report further quoted the State Financial Officer Datuk Jamalludin Al Amini Ahmad as saying that the State Treasury is recommending a RM50.0 Million deficit budget for 2011. Why further deficit when there is so much additional income?

Under the Pakatan Rakyat 10 months’ rule, we increased the revenue by RM103 Million or about 17% of the state revenue without increasing any form of taxes despite giving water, study grants and other assistance to the poor. We also collected only nominal premium and quit rent for conversion of agricultural land to building category for non profit organizations like the schools, religious organization and dialysis centres which amount to millions of ringgit.

Dato’ Zambry and the BN State Government have a duty to answer the people with regard to the abovesaid matters.

The people demands transparency and accountability from BN Perak Government but many people reminded me not to expect too much from robbers.
