Ladies & Gentlemen

First and foremost THANK THE ORGANISING CHAIRMAN & THE JOINT COMMITTEE MEMBERS FOR YOUR KIND INVITATION and the PRIVILEGE to give a speech and flag-off this morning’s event.

Well done and congratulations for organizing this meaningful event to create the Awareness of the importance of sight and learn to treasure and protect our sight.

Further it is an event held jointly by 8 Lions and One Lioness Club in Ipoh and Batu Gajah, this is very good rather than individually and in isolation to create the necessary IMPACT !

More NGOs should adopt the approach of jointly organizing events to create the critical mass and IMPACT !

SUBJECT MATTER -

Facts from The World Health Organisation (WHO) :

• Approximately 314 million people are visually impaired worldwide and 45 million of them are blind.

• Every 20 seconds, someone in the world becomes visually impaired.

• Most people with visual impairment are older, and females are more at risk at every age, in every part of the world.

• Cataract remains the leading cause of blindness globally, except in the most developed countries.

• Correction of refractive errors (short and long sightedness) could restore normal vision to more than 12 million children between the ages of 5 to 15.

• About 85% of all visual impartment is avoidable

Information obtain from Article “The Right To Sight” in the latest issue of
IPOH ECHO.

I hereby make an earnest appeal to the Welfare Department to expedite the processing of application for welfare aid for for INTRAOCULAR LENS (IOL); i.e to shorten the turn-around time instead of the present 6 months!

Ladies & Gentlemen

I like to share something I downloaded from the Internet:

A group of students were asked to list what they thought were the present “ Seven Wonders of the World”

Though there were some disagreements, the following received the most votes:

1. Egypt’s Great Pyramids
2. Taj Mahal
3. Grand Canyon
4. Panama Canal
5. Empire State Building
6. St. Peter’s Baslica
7. China’s Great Wall

While gathering the votes, the teacher noted that one student had not finished her paper yet. So she asked the girl if she was having trouble with her list. The girl replied,

“Yes, . little. I couldn’t quite make up my mind because there were so many.”

The teacher said, “Well, tell us what you have, and maybe we can help.”

The girl hesitated, then read, “ I think the “Seven Wonders of the World” are:

1. To See
2. To Hear
3. To Touch.
4. To Taste
5. To Feel
6. To Laugh
7. To Love

Ladies and Gentlemen.

The moral of the story. The things we overlook as simple and ordinary and that we take for granted are truly wondrous! A gentle reminder – that the most precious things in life cannot be built by hand or bought by man.

Lastly a note on politics – I believe everyone present here this morning will remember our former Health Minister – Dr Chua Jui Meng who was stripped of this Datukship a few months ago, after he left MCA and joint PKR !

I have much respect for a politician like Dr Chua Jui Meng who announced a few days ago that he will not contest in the next general election, he joined PKR not for position as he has been an MP and ex-Minister for 15 years but merely wants to see a Change in the country politics.

With that I wish everyone present Good Health and take good care of your eyes.

Thank you, terima kasih, number nanthi, say say!

Yee Seu Kai
Adun Perak Kawasan Pokok Assam
